| Chapter 5PlantsRevision.What are the parts of the vascular plants?RootsLocationSpreading under the groundFunction· It anchor the plant in the ground.· It absorb water and minerals from the soil.· It transports the absorbed material from the soil to all plant parts.Structure:· Outer thin layer called the epidermis.· Contains two types of vascular tissues called:1.Phloem tissue: it transports sugar that is made by the plant leaves throughout the plant.2. Xylem tissue:it transports water that has been taken by the roots to all plant parts.Types of roots: Tap root
| Fibrous roots | ü Is a kind of large roots that store food and sugar inside it, it has smaller roots that spread out from it,
ü Carrots and sweet potato.
| ü Is a kind of root system that spread throughout the soil like the branches of the tree.
ü Examples: sunflowers
| STEMSLocation:it is above the groundFunction:v It supports the plant into the ground.v It transports water and sugar made by the leaves through the plant parts.Types: herbaceous | woody | v Green and easy to bend.
v stems often die in cold weathers, but their roots continue.
v It grow new stem each year.
v E.g.clover,grasses.
| v Rigid and strong.
v Grow tall and live many years, their stems don’t die.
v E.g tree trunk,shrubs
v | Structure:Also it contains xylem to transport water taken by the roots to all plant part And it contains phloem tissue the transports the sugar made by the plant leaves to the stems and the roots.Notes on stemsü A white potato is a kind of underground stem called a tuber ü Tubers store food that help the plant to survive times:1.Little rains2. Cold weathers.3. When the plant cannot make the suger they need.LEAVES:Location:above the ground.Function: to make food in the form of glucose for the plantMain structure of the leaf:1.Small holes on the upper and the lower epidermis called the STOMA.2. Each stoma is surrounded with two GUARD CELLS, which work together to open and close the stoma.3. How stomata works?ü Most stomata opens in the daytime and close at night.ü During sunlight stomata take in water, which put pressure on the two guard cells to force it to a curved shape.ü When this happens, stomata opens.ü Gases passes in from the air & water passes out…this loss of water is called TRANSPIRATION.ü As more water passes out through transpiration, more water is pulled up through the xylem that is why?? The plants need most of the water taken by the roots ,,,to replace the loss during transpiration.ü If there is too much water lost by transpiration than that which taken by the roots, THE PLANT WILL WILT. | |
